For 8 months of the year, sons and daughters and grandsons and granddaughters of horse racing legends of all breeds come from all over North America and Canada and grace our State of Arizona to race at our local track. With a long racing season and as many as 2,100 horses stabled there at any given time, it is inevitable that many of these runners will be in need of a new home by meet's end.
Unfortunately many of them do not have a guaranteed future when their racing days end. Some horses are just not fast enough to continue racing and others have a recoverable injury and need a place to rehabilitate. All were bred for heart, intelligence, and athleticism and are easily retrained and deserve a new home.
In 2011 After The Homestretch-AZ (ATHA) was established and has been answering this need. ATHA has already taken in 54 horses and found homes for 38 of them. Currently 16 horses are being rehabilitated and retrained in preparation of finding new, permanent homes. But now the nonprofit itself needs to find a permanent home to guarantee its future and to continue its mission of securing second chances for these horses.
In March of this year the 2-acre property the rescue has been leasing was sold. The new owners have plans to to develop it immediately....After The Homestretch must move. As sometimes it often happens, a fabulous and better opportunity appeared. A nearby 5-acre ranch with a water well, training arena, round pen, barn, turnouts with shades, tack shed, feed shed and a small house for a caretaker came up for sale.
At the outset, the Capital Campaign's goal was $425,000 to purchase and set up the property but prior to the official kickoff of its Capital Campaign, After The Homestretch-AZ is already a third of the way to its goal!! Over $130,000 has been raised with only $295,000 now needed to ensure and “secure a second chance” for all breeds of racehorses who have their WHOLE lives ahead of them. For a nonprofit to own its own property means security and longevity. For all breeds of racehorses, their future will no longer be uncertain.
“The generosity of our community now and throughout these 6 years has amazed us”, added Dannielle Marturana, the President. Please be the voice for these horses by “securing them a second chance”. They deserve a long and purposeful life.
